Dear Linden Lab:
Congratulation for listening to resident feedback and making changes in Display Names that will make them at least bearable for most of us.
I must say, however, that the following from the FAQ is a HUGE fuck-you from the Lab to all of us.

Feel free to change our own names when someone mimics us? FEEL FREE TO CHANGE OUR OWN NAMES? FEEL FREE TO CHANGE OUR OWN GODDAMN NAMES?
How incredibly goddamned patronizing! Feel free to go fuck yourselves!

Can I prevent other Residents from using my display name?
No, display names are not meant to be unique identifiers. Instead, if you notice that others are using a similar display name, feel free to change your own name.----

Yet another in a long line of continuing disappointments with SL and LL. They have truly jumped the shark.
Someone at the Lab raise a point about other services and about email in particular: there might be any number of people named Jane Q. Public but they all have different email addresses. Their argument was that this is okay because our usernames will be unique. To which I would reply: 1) Second Life isn't email (or Facebook... or...) and 2) there's no GOOD reason to allow someone to assume the name of an established avatar.
Additional evidence that LL doesn't "get" its own creation. They're making a change to a fundamental in-world assumption. I can change my appearance at will, but I'm always going to be Whatcha. The label on the box is consistent with the contents. With Display Names as implemented, they throw all of that out.
