Dragons!

Here are two beautiful photos of dragons by Sweetie. They're prim dragons  that sit at W&M Designs at WM Dragons Temple sim.

Sweetie disappeared the ground with Rendering options, making the dragon appear to be flying. Cool, huh?

Sweetie is brilliant.

Box People

Here's Sweetie's photo of the box people.

Phoenixes DO NOT PERCH

Phoenixes DO NOT Perch!

Yesterday Sweetie and I decided to visit a couple of places before setting down to work on Whimsy Kaboom (no SLURL for Kaboom yet, as we've not yet settled on terrain, so just head west from Whimsy.

Somewhere along the line I suggested we visit Grendel’s Children; this was because when I asked my brother Mordecai where we might find an appropriate flying steampunk structure, he suggested we look at Grendel’s entrance area.

It was only for a quick look, but two hours and 80 avatars later, we were still there.

Sweetie—not surprisingly for someone of her artistic temperament—was showing signs of being bored. Sometimes she crosses places off her list before they ever really rez. Rezzing can be slow for her. Slow computer.

But when we saw the box people, she was enraptured. And irritated, because one of the boxes had made a group called Boxes ‘R Us, a name she knew she deserved and wished she had thought up.

Because Sweetie, as my faithful readers will remember, is quite often a box. (She reminds me to remind you that she is a beautiful ornate Asian box with black laquer bump-mapped finish and custom hover text. Usually her hover text reads something like "I have corners; therefore, I am.)

We found ourselves surrounded by a dozen or so box people, some still partly human, as they tried on their box avatars.

“My question is,” I asked of the boxes, “Are you guys empty, and if not, with what are you filled?” They ignored me, and before long they had dispersed. Maybe it was an inappropriate question to ask a box.

About that time a book flew past.

Not when one says a book flies past, the assumption is it has been flung. And if it has been flung, it stands to reason that someone, somewhere, is a flinger.

But there were no flingers about, just a flying book, pages fluttering as it moved about.

And when it landed, the book closed and was just… a book.

We found the sign for the box avatar, which was free, and I found another, the sign for the book avie, at just 50L. And then I saw a sign for a grandfather clock avatar, and the buying spree began.

Grendel’s children has every type of non-human avatar possible. A PARTIAL list would include, in addition to the aforementioned boxes, clocks, and books: quadrupedal dragons, bipedal dragons, human-dragon hybrids, human-everything-else hybrids, pre-human hominids, mechanical men, dirigibles, gargoyles, sand worms, werewolves, sphinxes, centaurs, demons, imps, angels, gods and goddesses, elementals, fairy lawyers, trees, rocks, sea creatures, dinosaurs, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and arachnids of every type, dozens of mammals ranging from moles to tigers, and more than a dozen species of real and mythological birds, nearly 1000 avatars in sizes varying from tiny to huge and sold in a humongous store that covers a full sim of a four-sim estate.

It was the bird display that gave this blog post its title.

Sweetie and I were methodically moving along the walls, discussing and buying dozens of avies (most $50L or under). When we reached the birds and she saw a picture of a glowing white flaming phoenix rising splendidly from its ashes, nothing would do but she have it.

We had been picking up all sorts of accessories and freebies along the way, and when I saw a bird perch, I said in all innocence, “Hon, there’s a perch. Only $2L.”

If avatars could swell up, Sweetie would have swelled. Maybe avies CAN swell, for I quite clearly remember her doing so.

“Phoenixes,” she announced proudly, “DO NOT PERCH!”

Sweetie's Blue Period

Picasso had his blue period, which lasted for years. Sweetie's lasted only one day, but she made some remarkable photos of Whimsy, using GIMP.

Taking a Moment for Real Life

Taking a Moment for Real Life

My first life changed when I came to Second Life. I stopped watching television, stopping talking to people who annoyed me (before SL I talked to them out of a sense of duty, I guess), and I got more than a bit behind on my home repair projects and even simple tasks like dusting. Second Life does that.

Over the past week I’ve taken some extra time for my first life, walking around the beautiful lake that is only feet from my home.

The mornings have been pleasantly chill, about 64 degrees F., the sun has been out, and irises, rhododendron, honeysuckle, and other plants of late spring have been blooming in profusion. The air is filled with birdsong and the drumming of a woodpecker and scented with pine needles and sweet flowery fragrances. The lake shimmers.

I pass people enjoying the park, neighbors wave as they pass me in their cars and trucks, and all is right with the world.

On my first walk I chanced across a friend with a pair of enthusiastic setters that did their utmost to race after every errant squirrel, passing dog, and dragonfly. My friend and I caught up with each other, talking about mutual friend and projects.

Then, on the back side of the lake, in the shadows, we saw the biggest carp in the world. It was nearly three feet long and must have weighed 60 pounds. It looked exactly like a 10-cent goldfish stretched enthusiastically along its X, Y, and Z axes. It swam slowly among submerged branches, paying us no attention. We watched it for minutes.

“I wonder if that’s the little guy I put in the lake three years ago,” I mused, and when I spoke, two turtles we hadn’t seen launched themselves from the log on which they had been sunning and splashed into the water..

Yesterday I saw a pair of Canada geese with two fluffy newly-hatched goslings. The parents eyed me warily as I passed, giving them plenty of room.

Atlanta is a town filled with neighborhoods that people who will sue you if you paint your house the “wrong” color or put a pink flamingo in your yard. But my little town—well, in the past few days I’ve seen an eight-foot cast iron pterodactyl perched on a roof, a concrete birdbath gaily painted so it looked like the big spotted mushrooms one sees here and there on the grid. I’ve seen muskrats and a heron and a tree house and more yard structures and wind chimes than I could mention.

But just to show you where my heart is, when I’ve seen most of those things, I’ve thought about how I could recreate them in Second Life.

More From Korriban

Here are a couple of great photos my Sweetie took last night on Korriban while I was getting eaten by giant green statues.

Sweetie has a short attention span. For example, my being eaten by monstrous statuary was great fun, but it could hold her for only so long. Then she was off, chasing after an armored-up role player to ask for a portrait (which turned out fabulous, by the way and is now on said avie's profile. When I finally wriggled from the monsters' grasp I had to track her down. I wandered through endless caverns, scales walls of broken-down sculptures, and jump pits filled with molten lava-- but I finally found her, lost in a photographer's haze and about to step onto a trap door. I got to her just in time.

Shreked

Shreked!

Usually I’m online before Sweetie is, but last night she beat me to the grid.

It took her only seconds to get into trouble.

Here I am saving her from horrible green monsters.

Just kidding.

Last night I joined Sweetie on the Korriban sim, a new and not-yet-finished Start Trek role-playing sim of which impressive pictures are already posted on Flickr. She was in a photographer’s trance, and the nature of the place was such I soon was, too.

Sweetie beckoned me to a cave she had discovered, whereupon I was grabbed by horrible green monsters.

No, no, no. That’s not what happened at all!

The monsters are real enough. But they’re green only because Sweetie had her Mystitool avatar light set on green with intensity and radius far above the norm (think intensity 20 and radius 30 meters).

At Sweetie’s request (for some reason, maybe because I’m handy, she likes to use me a model) I rezzed a “die” poseball, sat on it, and positioned it so I would be in the monsters’ clutches.

And then we both took pictures. I used Outy Banjo’s Auto Emote to give myself an expression of staunch determination. What? You don’t think that’s an expression of staunch determination? Really?

I took several pictures before I realized I had left Highlight Transparent turned on. Those are the snapshots in which I have flaming red hair.

My elaborate Japanese hairdo seems to give me troll ears.

Green skin. Red hair. Troll ears. Now you know why I call this post Shreked.

p.s. Sweetie’s photos are better than mine.
